The Piano Composer | Piano Composition Course
The Piano Composer is a unique journey into piano playing and composition, designed for music producers and composers of every genre. Whether you write for film, TV, games, trailers, EDM, or hip hop, the piano is often where ideas are born—and this course shows you how to turn those ideas into expressive, fully developed pieces.
Guided by pianist and composer David McCaulley—known for his detailed film score analyses and deep knowledge of piano technique—you’ll explore everything from posture and fundamentals to advanced harmony, modes, voicings, and compositional tools. Along the way, you’ll practice with dedicated exercises, follow writing assignments that expand your ideas step by step, and steadily build your own original composition.
Developed in collaboration with Nikolaus Daim from Master The Score, this course combines practical piano instruction with a clear compositional path, ensuring that you not only improve as a player but also grow as a composer. By the end, you’ll have the skills and confidence to take any idea that starts at the piano and transform it into music that is dynamic, expressive, and truly your own.
David McCaulley
David began playing the piano at a young age, but it was during this time that he discovered a profound love for orchestral film music. Encouraged by his piano teacher, he began playing arrangements of his favorite film scores—an experience that sparked a deep and lasting passion for composing at the piano.
He soon began creating score reductions and analytical breakdowns of iconic film scores, which he shared on YouTube. Over the years, he produced well over 150 of these reductions. This intensive practice allowed him to absorb the techniques of film music masters and gradually integrate them into his own musical language.
After high school, David studied composition and piano at the University of North Texas, where he brought together his passions by writing for both small and large ensembles, performing new music, and playing with internationally acclaimed groups such as the North Texas Wind Symphony. He studied piano with world-class pianists and composition with respected composers including Bruce Broughton, Sungji Hong, Jeffrey Hepker, and Drew Schnurr.
David has written a wide range of concert music and scored numerous media projects—always anchored by his connection to the piano. In his course The Piano Composer, he shares his knowledge and experience to help fellow musicians explore and deepen their own creative journey at the keyboard.

I've taken many courses before, but this one really elevated my music skills.
My piano playing improved drastically, and my compositions gained a whole new level of depth and variation. Now I feel I can take any idea and turn it into a full piece. I'm so glad I joined!

What You’ll Experience in the Course
This course is divided by the following steps:
Chapter 1
We begin our journey by laying the groundwork—both at the piano and as composers. In this chapter, you’ll establish a healthy, comfortable playing posture and learn the essential techniques that prevent injury and give you freedom at the keyboard. We’ll cover fundamental exercises to build coordination, finger strength, and control, while introducing scales, chords, and progressions in a way that connects directly to your creative process.
At the same time, we’ll dive into the building blocks of composition: motifs, chord functions, and phrasing. You’ll not only practice the technical side of piano playing but also immediately apply it to writing—starting with your very first chord progression. This will be the seed of a piece we’ll continue to develop and expand throughout the course.
Chapter 1 is about creating a strong foundation: technique, theory, and creativity all working together to set you on a path toward more expressive and powerful music.

- Posture & technique
- Scales & triads
- Motifs & progressions
- Phrasing & pedals
- First chord progression
Chapter 2
In this chapter, we expand both our technique and our creative voice. You’ll learn new voicing styles—closed, open, and combined—that bring color and variety to your playing. We’ll also develop stronger control with scale work and octave exercises.
On the compositional side, we dive into melody writing, voice leading, and cadences—core concepts that shape how music flows and feels. You’ll practice crafting balanced phrases, explore how melodies and chords interact, and apply everything step by step as we continue building our piece with and richer harmonies.

- Voicings& scales
- Melody writing
- Voice leading
- Cadences & phrasing
- Developing harmonic ideas
Chapter 3
In this chapter, we move beyond the basics and dive into the colorful world of modes, harmonic expansion, and advanced compositional tools. You’ll discover how to use modal writing, modal interchange, and chromatic techniques to give your music fresh colors and unexpected turns. We’ll also explore non-functional harmony, pedal tones, mediants, and planing—powerful devices that can instantly transform the atmosphere of your piece.
Alongside these harmonic tools, we’ll continue improving piano technique—learning how to combine chords and melodies in one hand for a fuller sound. On the compositional side, you’ll expand your sketches both harmonically and melodically, explore the importance of contrast, and write a second, contrasting theme to enrich your piece.

- Modes & modal interchange
- Chromatic and diatonic expansions
- Writing contrasting themes
- Pedal tones, mediants & planing
- Chords and melody in one hand
Chapter 4
In the final chapter, we bring everything together and focus on how to shape a complete, polished piece. You’ll learn essential techniques for development—altering motifs, creating accompaniment patterns, and using the “family tree” method to expand your thematic material. We’ll also cover how to craft effective intros and outros, making sure your music starts and ends with impact.
On the technical side, you’ll practice multi-octave scales and arpeggios, and explore expressive devices like transitions, ramps, and flourishes. Finally, we’ll take all the skills you’ve built and apply them to finishing your composition—giving it structure, momentum, and a strong sense of closure.

- Accompaniment patterns
- motif development
- Writing intros and outros
- The “family tree” method
- Modulations, transitions & flourishes
- Completing your full composition
Chapter 5
As a special bonus for film music fans and composers, everything comes together in this chapter as we create a fully developed film suite from the ground up. Starting with simple motifs, we’ll build memorable hero and villain themes, learn to harmonize and vary them, and expand our sketches into rich, multi-staff arrangements. Along the way, you’ll develop your own accompaniment patterns, practice expanding themes across registers, and explore how variation and contrast give a piece dramatic shape. By the end of this chapter, you’ll have written your own complete suite—bringing together everything learned in the course. As a bonus, we’ll also explore playing Chopin and working on expressive melody playing to deepen your artistry at the piano.

- Write hero and villain themes
- Harmonize and expand motifs
- Build multi-staff arrangements
- Add cinematic contrast and variation
- Explore expressive playing with Chopin
